Eneas arrived in Sydney in 1841 with his parents on the "United Kingdom". Shipping records state he was 14 yrs of age as at 17 March 1841 (this could be his date of birth), making his year of birth 1827.
On 13 Jul 1853, Eneas married Mary Hanlon (or O'Hanlon) at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. Mary O'Hanlon had arrived in Australia on the "Albatross" in 1841 with her parents, James Hanlon and Elizabeth McNamara. From the shipping records of the "Albatross" it has been learned that Mary was 17 years old in 1841 and her occupation was that of "child's maid". Her native place was given as Manchester - though parents and siblings were said to have been born in Dublin. Mary's older brother James, who was 18 years old in 1841, was left behind in Ireland.
The 1855 Sydney Post Office Directory lists an Evans OAKMAN (presumably Eneas), boot and shoemaker at 59 Parramatta Street (next door to Golden Anchor Hotel between Linden Land & Dalton's Lane).
Also in 1855, Eneas and Mary's first child, Elizabeth Mary Oakman, was born in Windmill Street, Sydney.
About 1858 their second daughter, Margaret Oakman, was born - supposedly in Windsor but no record has been found of her birth or baptism.
1861 finds Eneas listed in the Sydney Post Office Directory as William Oakman, shoemaker, Kensington St, Chippendale. Interestingly, his father John died in Kensington Street in 1861 - perhaps John was living with Eneas at the time.
In 1862 a son, John Patrick Oakman, was born, but died at just 12 months of age on 13 Feb 1863 in Bay Street, Glebe. Eneas and Mary were living in Glebe Street, Glebe at the time so perhaps the baby John died in the home of a relative - one of Mary's family perhaps.
The 1863 Sand Directory of Sydney lists Eneas as living in Mays Lane, Sydney. A check of the Gregories Map shows a Mays Street, Annandale which could be the same streat. Later directories do not list Eneas - perhaps they moved away from Sydney for a while?
Mary died on 5 June 1879 at Mitchell St, Glebe. Her death certificate states she had been suffering from "Epileptiform Convulsions" for 7 weeks prior to her death. Mary was buried in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Rookwood.
Eneas died on 4 Nov 1908 at the George Street Asylum in Parramatta. He was 79 years old and cause of death was "Senile Decay". He was buried the following day in the Roman Catholic Cemetery at Rookwood - Section P, Mortuary 2, Grave 1357.
A number of variations have been found in the spelling of Eneas' name: Aeneas, Ennis, Enais

Children:
Samual Taylor (1885 - unknown)
Elizabeth Mary Oakman was baptised on 27 Mary 1855 at St Mary's Catholic Church in Sydney, NSW.
When Elizabeth and Samuel married, they were both about 42 years old. They appear to have settled in Sydney and were living in Princes Street when Samuel died 12 months later (7 Mar 1898).
Elizabeth had a child (Samuel) twelve years prior to her marriage to Samuel Taylor. Young Samuel's birth was registered in 1885 in Sydney - though father's name was not listed on the birth registration. Presumably the baby was her future husband's and they lived in a de facto relationship for some years before marrying, or there was some reason why they couldn't marry earlier - Samuel Snr away at sea etc. In those days, unless the couple were married, any children they might have had were registered as illegitimate.
Samuel was working as a coal lumper at Circular Quay in 1898 and on the afternoon of Monday 7 March he was "running the plank" in coaling the Orient Liner Ormus from the steamer Currajong when he fell down the hold of the Currajong. Taken to hospital by ambulance, he was unconcious with broken ribs and scalp and internal injuries and died soon afterwards. The Coroner's inquest returned a verdict of accidental death. (Source: "Sydney Morning Herald", 8/3/1898 and 9/3/1898)
The "Sydney Morning Herald" of 18 Oct 1930 contains a death notice for Elizabeth was states she her death occurred at her residence, 20 Garnett St, Hurlstone Park. She was 73 and her funeral was also to be held at her home.
Samuel and Elizabeth are buried together at Waverley Cemetery, Sydney, Grave CofE-7-3318. Their headstone is badly worn away and difficult to read.

I wish to express my appreciation to Ann Loffhagen of New Zealand for her assistance in researching Margaret and her family. Sadly, Ann passed away shortly after we had managed to track down all of Margaret and John's descendants.
My thanks, also, to Mrs B Pope, a descendant of Margaret and John Burrows, for the photographs shown on this page.
