John Joseph died at just 42 years of age, while living in Victoria Parade, Collingwood. The cause of death given on his death certificate was "Locomotive Ataxy and Asthema" from which he had been suffering for a period of two years. He was buried with his parents at Booroondara Cemetery in Kew on 17 Sept 1910.
John had never married or had any children.
