This would mean that John left Sydney before 1871 and travelled to South Australia where he remained until about 1881. John was 57 yrs of age when he died of "Vascular Heart Disease" on 5 April 1897. He is buried with his sister, Margaret Hanslow, in Booroondara Cemetery, Kew.

John was a witness at the marriage of his brother James Robert Oakman to Alice Grant in 1867. Did John and James travel together to Victoria after their father's death in 1861? Were they miners together in Ballarat before James married Alice? What did John do until his return to Victoria about 1881?
