UK Census records list a couple of Oakmans who originated from Ireland. The earliest is Janet Oakman, born circa 1773 in Ireland. Janet worked as a Charwoman and was living in the Union Workhouse in Houghton Le Spring, Durham, in 1861. Listed below are other Irish Oakmans found in England — some have been omitted in order to protect the privacy of living individuals.
John Oakman
The 1871 UK Census lists a John Oakman and his family — wife Elizabeth, and young children John (Nathanael John) and Margaret. John was a soldier with the British Royal Army and was stationed at Stoke Damerel, Devonport at the time of the Census. Under the heading "Where Born" on the census record, the word Grange (which has been crossed out) County Armagh, Ireland has been written. John's age in 1871 was 29 years, making his birth year approximately 1842. Elizabeth was 22 (born about 1849).
By 1880 John was stationed at Kildare in Ireland where his son Edward William was born. I have not been able to trace John or Elizabeth any further.
John and Elizabeth's son, Nathaniel John, was living in Devonport, England in 1901, working as an Engine Fitter. The UK Census shows him as widowed and living with his daughters Francis and Faith Mary. Francis was born in Scotland about 1899 and Faith Mary was born in Devonport in 1901. Nathaniel's wife must have died shortly before the census was taken.
