Street directories, post office directories, lists of inhabitants, indexes of wills and probate records, census remnants, Ulster Covenant signatories, all go into the mix in searching for the Oakman surname in Northern Ireland.
There are still sources of information which I have not had the opportunity to check. I will list these soon, at the bottom of the page. I do hope to check these sources one day!

This publications contains a list of "Subscribers Names" — among them is Mr Robert OAKMAN. No mention is made of where Robert Oakman lived, or any further information about him. In these times, subscribers were those who contributed to the publication in some way, either with information or monetary funds towards publication costs.
Page 183 of this publication lists Mr Walter Oakman of Ballyminimore and Messrs Oakman, McNeice and Sloan of Pigeontown as having "good habitations in this rural district".
A section of this book summarises Shaw Mason's "Survey of Ireland" which was published in 1816 and contains a detailed report on Glenavy written by the vicar, Rev Edward Cupples. Rev Cupples listed eleven "important houses and occupants" in Glenavy in 1815. Three of these belonged to Oakmans:
Another section of the book summarises Rev Charles Watson's "Glenavy: Past and Present" which was published in 1892. Rev Watson lists seventeen "big houses" — among them John Oakman's property "Pigeontown".
