With Scotland being so close to Northern Ireland it isn't surprising to find some of our "Irish Oakmans" living there.
Below is a list of Oakmans I have found in Scotland — there's more to add, when time permits, so please check back again soon!
Prior to 1881
By the early 1870s, Caroline Oakman of Co Armagh and her husband Joseph McClelland were living in Glasgow where Joseph worked as a labourer. The first two children — Thomas and Joseph — were born in Co Armagh, while remaining children (Robert, Wilson, Ann, John and Caroline) were all born in Scotland.
1881 Census
Brothers James Oakman (born c1861) and Robert Oakman (born c1858) were living with their mother's sister Margaret Ward (nee Elliott) and her husband John Ward, at 10 Francis Street, Glasgow.
James' and Robert's parents, Elizabeth Elliot and William Oakman were married on 17 January 1855 in the Loughall Church of Ireland, County Armagh in Northern Ireland. James and Robert are likely to have been born in or near Loughall.
Also in Scotland in 1881 was Edward Oakman (born c1855). Edward was working as a Tailor Coat Maker, living with his wife Mary and her daughter Sarah Jane Harkins in the town of Greenock in Renfrew. Whether Edward was related to James and Robert is not yet known.
1891 Census
By 1891 James Oakman has married. His wife Mary, two children Robert (born c1889) and Ann (born c1891), and his mother Eliza Oakman are found living at 3 Francis St, Glasgow. James is working as a Coal Dealer.
James' brother, Robert, has also married by this time. He and his wife Susanna are living at 4 Ritchie St, Glasgow. Robert is also a Coal Dealer.
Edward is working as a Tailor, now living in Glasgow — the Census listing him as unmarried.
1901 Census
James, his wife Minnie, and children Robert, Annie, Willie, Elizabeth, Minnie and Susanna are living at 69 Butterbiggins Road, Glasgow by 1901. Living at the same address are Robert and Susanna. The Census lists James and Robert as "employers" and Coal Merchants — perhaps they were in business together.
1924
James Alexander Oakman, son of Robert Oakman and Margaret McClarnon, born 1868 in Belfast, married Isabella Griffen on 29 September 1924 in Partick, Lanark. James was the older brother of Charles Yates Oakman, Joseph Albert Oakman and Annie Mulligan who emigrated to the US in the early 1900s.
